“He’s not happy about it. I argued that she’d be under excellent medical care, but he’s worried about the burns getting infected and that kind of thing.”


“I’m swaddled like a baby,” Carly complained. “And I don’t think Gideon dragged me here to let me die from something as stupid as an infection.” She turned to Jesse. “If I get out of here, where am I going?”


Jesse’s gaze darted to her and then back to Derek. “I think it would be best if she stayed with you. Michelle and I are busy, and she has Dominique anyway. Plus, unless Foster’s been lurking around, he probably doesn’t know you’re really involved in this at all.”


Derek didn’t even hesitate to answer. “Anything you want. As long as it’s all right with Carly.”


Derek’s, Michelle’s, or Jesse’s? Not even a contest. “It’s more than all right with me.”


Michelle moved to the foot of the bed. “Where is Foster staying? Wherever he is, he’s using enough shields to keep me from sensing him.”
