The priest shook his head. “I’m afraid he’s not available this evening. He’s taken a few days sabbatical. But he’ll be back for mass on Sunday.”
Sunday. That was four days away. Too late to do them any good.
“But you still see Brother Foster come in here regularly? Does he attend mass or go to confessional?” Jesse asked.
The priest’s confusion returned. “Regularly? No, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to mislead you. He’s only come in to visit with Father Peter once or twice. He didn’t seem well, actually, and this last time, he showed up right at dawn to see him. Father Peter was quite agitated when Brother Foster left.”
“Did Father Peter happen to mention why?” Jesse smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry to be so nosey and take up your time, but we have an urgent message for him and it’s been nearly impossible to track him down.”
“No, but that was when Father Peter announced he was taking a few days off. I assumed it was to help his friend.”
