She scowled as something occurred to her. “You’re going to make me sit in the back, aren’t you?”

“Yes. But isn’t that better than making you ride in the boot?” Jesse asked, gesturing for her to lead the way to the car. They fell in step behind her, and though Jesse lowered his voice, she could still hear him. “What sort of magic does she have surrounding me? I never sensed anything.”

“Foster said it’s a combination of protection and prevention spells,” Gideon replied, in an even lower voice. “Like a permanent fog only a select few can see in or out of.”

Jesse was silent for a beat. “I guess that’s why it took me four weeks before I could even question anything. I never left the house until that night.”
