“You don’t like me,” he said. “You just spent three minutes telling me how much you want Jesse away from me. There is absolutely no reason for me to believe you’ll do as you say.”

“I cannot believe the lengths you’d go for nothing more than spite. You hate me, so you’d condemn Jesse to death or worse. That’s why you’re fighting me. But you’re not strong enough to stop me.”

“Maybe not.” Which was an unfortunate fact he’d had to live with for a century. “But I can sure as hell get in your way long enough so we both lose him.”

“That’s a real touching statement of your devotion. The only one who is going to lose him is you.”

“And haven’t I lost enough already? Let this go.”

Michelle’s mouth opened to speak, but the shrill ring of Gideon’s cell phone stopped her. She gave him a dirty look as he pulled it out of his pocket, moving as far away from all the equipment as he could get to answer.

“Now is not a good time, Derek.”
