“I want you to go first,” Gideon said from the back seat. “I’ll go after.”

She glanced over. He was watching her from underneath the blanket, his eyes solemn. “I’m not the one who’s going to go poof.”

“And I won’t if you run fast.”

“Jesse would kill me if you dusted before you got there.”

Gideon smiled. “You’re saying you don’t run that fast? You forget I saw you last night. You’ve got enough fire in you to give both of us a run for our money.”

She knew what he was trying to do. It wasn’t going to work. Jesse might suck up that infamous charm with a straw—and that was as far as she was willing to let that analogy go—but Gideon was going to have to work a little bit harder with her.
