Chapter 41

“How do you know this worked?” she said, panting.

“Because the car is gone?” Gideon stood in the center aisle. Somehow, even getting dressed under a blanket didn’t hamper him from looking immaculate. He looked past Dominique to the door behind her. “Is everything all right, Jess?”

Jesse pushed the door shut. “We’re all in one piece, and the rift closed behind us. So I’m going to assume yes.”

Her heart was still pounding. The look Gideon shot her said he heard it, too. “So what now?” She plopped in the rear pew and propped her feet up on the back of the pew in front of her. “We gotta find a way back to Chicago, right? That’s the plan.”

“That’s the plan.”

She glanced over to see Jesse unbuttoning his shirt and quickly glanced away. His muttered curse drew her attention again, and her eyes widened at the sight of his arm. The blood had stopped, but the gash was still ugly, deep, and red.
