Chapter 68

“You okay?” Jesse asked. “We can just walk home if this bothers you.”

“A cab works, too. Funny how many of them this city has.”

Jesse regarded him with an arched brow. “I should have known you had an accomplice for the dimensional magic.”

His stomach knotted further. He’d hoped the issue of John would be over, but he had a feeling it had only been delayed a little bit. Once Jesse had fewer things distracting him, he’d start asking questions, and it would be like the situation with Mary all over again. Worse, because in many ways, Gideon considered his history with John as inconsequential. The only reason he never talked about it was because of how bad it made him look. He’d been fortunate that Jesse had never pressed for details about what he’d hoped to gain from messing with the dimensional power in the first place, though it was surprising Michelle had never enlightened him. She took every opportunity she could get to make Gideon look bad.

“Did you look at John’s journal yet?”
