Chapter 68

“Stop it!” Ellis’ shout was the last thing Nash heard before the pain conquered him. 23

“Arlo? Arlo! Come on, wake up.”

Arlo tried to shut the voice out. Pain too sharp to be real throbbed in his head.

“Damn, your skin is like ice. Wake up!”

Someone was shaking him. Arlo was so cold it hurt, but the ground was warm against his cheek.

“Arlo!”

It was Ellis, had to be. Arlo tried to open his eyes, his eyelids too heavy to lift, but he managed a sound.

“Arlo.” The word turned into a sob, and this time Arlo forced his eyes open. Darkness. Everything was dark and cold and wet.

“Ellis?”

Hands ran over his arms. “Yes, I’m here. Are you okay?”

“Splendid.” His throat hurt as if he’d been screaming for hours. “Nash?”

“I left him face down in the dirt next to Gil.” A drop landed on Arlo’s cheek, and he realized Ellis was crying.
