“Goodbye, Amelia,” Ruby said, crouching down to give Amelia a final looking over. She adjusted Amelia’s winter coat, buttoned the top button. “It’s killer cold out there. You’ve got your gloves?”
Amelia nodded.
“I’ll be visiting soon,” Ruby promised. “Next time I see you, you’ll be back in school, I’ll bet.”

“How do you like your room?” Jackson asked as we carried up the last of her suitcases.
She looked around, frowned, did not answer.
“You don’t like it?” Jackson said, worry in his voice.
She shrugged.
“We’ll go shopping this weekend. I thought I’d let you pick out a bedspread. I wanted to be sure it was something you liked. Maybe something with a princess on it?”
“A princess?” she said, incredulous.
“You don’t like princesses?” Jackson asked.
“I’m not three years old!”
“Well, it’s a good thing I decided to wait and let you pick it out yourself. No telling what kind of nonsense you might have to put with if you let me do it.”
