Mrs. Ledbetter peered at Amelia and actually smiled.

“You’re such a pretty girl,” Mrs. Ledbetter said. “Please. Come in.”

We left our winter coats on hooks in the foyer and followed Mrs. Ledbetter into the dining room, where Lydia had laid dishes for supper.

“It’s so nice of you to come,” Mrs. Ledbetter said, seating herself rather unceremoniously and looking haggard and very, very tired.

“How is Dad doing?” Jackson asked.

She merely shook her head. “I couldn’t stay there any longer. I had to come home, have a decent meal, a decent sleep. But I’m afraid he’s going to…”

“It could be a long time before he comes out of it,” Jackson reminded her.
