“But Tony’s so nice,” Amelia said, wiping at her eyes. “It isn’t fair.”

“No, it isn’t,” Jackson agreed.

“And she said the two of you were—”

“Don’t you worry about anything she said, honey,” Jackson replied. “Don’t you pay it any attention.”

“But she was so mean!”

“She’s an unhappy woman in a very unhappy situation, but we have each other, don’t we? We’re a family and we stick together, and it doesn’t matter what some woman like that says. You understand me? We’ve got each other, and we’ll take care of each other, and it don’t matter what anybody says about us.”

She looked at Tony, who was seated beside her, buckled into his seat and looking sleepy, and bit at her lip.

“I wanted you to see her,” Jackson said, “because I wanted you to understand that Tony needs us. He needs you. You’re his sister, and he needs your help. He needs all of us. We’re not going to let that woman or any other woman or any other person do anything to him ever again. Understand?”
