“Her mama pitched a fit about that song,” Mama said. “Why does she have to put something like that on there? Why, Wiley? What the neighbors are going to think, I’m sure I don’t know. And I don’t dare tell Father Ginderbach about it. I just hope and pray he doesn’t buy that CD and listen to it. I would be so embarrassed.”

I chuckled.

“You think it’s funny?” she demanded.

“Mama, it isfunny. It’s just a song. And it’s a country song, and they’re all about sex. Or trucks. Or hound dogs. Or drinking. I hope she’s a great big success. Is she coming for the July the Fourth party?”

“Of course she is. She hasn’t forgotten us. Not like some people I know.”

“I haven’t forgotten you, Mama.”

“You’d never know it by the number of phone calls I get from you. And I’m retired now, so I have lots of time on my hands, but does my phone ever ring? You’re too busy, and Billy’s going through a phase.”

“A phase?”
