Chapter 17

When she had first opened her eyes and seen the worry in his brilliant blue eyes, Emma had been prepared for the worst. It was a relief to hear that everybody was safe, and though the thought of losing all their belongings stung, Emma had been without for so much of her adult life that it was inconsequential. Jesse and Gideon were what mattered most, and they were both safe and healthy.

She wanted to appreciate that.

“I don’t know how long I’ll last tonight,” she confessed. “I didn’t want to sleep more at the hospital because I didn’t want the doctors to have an excuse to keep me for another day.”

Jesse caressed the bare skin just above her shirt collar. “Then you shouldn’t be up anyway. You should let me take you to bed.”

Emma tilted her eyes up to his. “On one condition.”

“Name it.”

“Promise we’ll look tomorrow.”

“We will scour Chicago tomorrow. We won’t rest until we find the perfect place.”

She smiled. “At this point, I’ll settle for slightly used. Okay. You win.”
