Jesse pushed the library door open, and the candle he carried flickered in the draft, then reflected off of a pair of glowing eyes.


“Well, doesn’t she just look good enough to eat.” The words were a low, seductive rumble, swallowed by the darkness before pale skin became visible, and Gideon’s familiar features appeared off to her side. He stood several feet away, his head tilted slightly as his gaze raked over her, only to begin circling, his eyes never leaving her. “I’m kidding, by the way. I’m a great kidder.”


Emma swallowed and looked over to Jesse. He remained near the door, the candle just below his face. “I guess I’m not familiar with your legendary sense of humor.”


“It looks like we have a lot of getting to know you to do then.” No stopping, no pausing, nothing but his unblinking attention. “Though I do know one thing. I smelled it as soon as you walked through those doors.”
