Chapter 37

“Are things ever perfect?” Charlie asked softly.

“You’re asking the wrong guy,” Danielson replied with a smile. “I’m kind of new at this, and, well, I think maybe things are a little different for us.”

“Maybe.” Charlie shrugged in a non-committal fashion.

Danielson was silent for a while.

“But you look good, Charlie Calohan,” he said after a while.

“I look terrible,” Charlie countered quickly.

“Just take the compliment,” Danielson replied. “I suck at this so don’t make it any harder for me.”

Charlie grinned nervously.

“You don’t suck,” they said quietly.

“Whatever,” the boy answered, then stopped, and laughed. “I guess we’re both bad at accepting compliments.”

Charlie laughed with him.

“Where do you see yourself in five years?” he asked, and Charlie shrugged in response.

“Happy,” they said, then added, “I hope.”

Danielson nodded.

“You will be.”

“You sound really confident about that.”
