“It’s not about what I want, it’s about what’s best for my career.” Luke sighed. “I can worry about being happy and all that after I’ve gotten established, I guess. I need to focus on what’s important.” He didn’t sound like himself. He sounded distant, and defeated. “I’m sorry. I need to go.” Luke hung up.
“Tell me that didn’t sound like a cry for help to you.” Evan turned in his seat to face Nick.
Nick scratched his chin, eyes far away. “Oh, it did. It absolutely did. And it sounded like he wasn’t alone. But the question is, what can we do about it? He’s a grown man. If he says he can’t come out to play, so to speak, then we have to respect that.”
“Even though he sounds like he’s under duress?” Evan stood up. “You heard him. He sounds like he’s being held against his will.”
“And maybe he is. I don’t know. We can’t fix it until we know. I do know he said his uncle was supposed to be in town. And we do know that his family isn’t exactly big on relationships.”
