“It’s not sitting here and getting his head fluffed up by a couple of flatterers who just want to—” Driscoll cut himself off with a glance at his surroundings, as if he just now remembered where he was. “Who have an agenda of their own,” he finished. “What’s best for him is finishing graduate school, establishing his career, and really getting out there and making a name for himself in this field. He doesn’t need boyfriends. He doesn’t need attachments. He needs to keep his eyes on the prize. What’s the point of boyfriends when he’s going to Cal Tech in September anyway?”

“I’m not going to Cal Tech—”

“You’re going to the best program, damn it.” Driscoll glowered at Luke. “We’ve been over this and over this. You’re absolutely not sitting around here making moon eyes at a couple of perverts and wasting all that potential. The planet needs you, your family needs you, and your future needs you.”
