They has gotten about a third of the way down the mountain and were standing just off the trail, catching their breaths, when a snowboarder came down the hill. He hit a mogul just above them and triedto stop, twisting his body when he saw them there. Instead, he fell backwards, his board shooting out in front of him. Sonny turned to see the board headed toward Mycah.

“Mycah!” she yelled, but the board slammed into Mycah’s head and she went down to the ground and lay perfectly still.

“Mycah!!” Sonny scrambled as quickly as possible to get back up the slope to her.

“Oh, my God,” screamed the snowboarder as he, too, panicked in his rush to get to Mycah.

Sonny jammed her poles onto the bindings and kicked her skis off, knelt beside the still figure, and checked for a pulse. Yes, there was one, not as strong as she would have liked, but still a pulse.
