Chapter 8

“Em!” he cried in shock, kneeling over her limp form.

A second later, she groaned and stretched. She brushed off the dirt from her thin woolen dress and smiled. Rising from the ground, she prompted him. “You said you would take me to an elfin healer?”

“How did you…?”

“Same way I was able to climb up there. I’m elfshot. I’m not afraid to climb up because I’m not afraid to fall.”

“You could have gotten hurt,” he warned, his heart still racing from watching her near death.

Em merely shrugged. “That’s the point.”9

The handful of hours that Alec spent with Em as he led her back to his home were pleasant, and he hoped that Arnath would come to like her, too. But as soon as he introduced Em to his changeling brother, he realized the magnitude of his mistake.

He sighed in aggravation as he saw Arnath’s eyes light up at the sight of Em.

“Can you help her, brother?”
