Alec was ripped from the dreamless Void by the piercing wails of a sobbing woman. He tried to fight consciousness, snuggling deeper into the womb of sleep, but her incessant cries roused the empathy within him. He gave a sigh of regret as the tree’s roots receded, blearily rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, and shuffled his stiff joints towards the front door.
A cloaked woman was frantically clawing through the earth at the base of the tree, scooping out handfuls of soil as she wept. As Alec emerged from the tree, she collapsed upon the ground, pressing her face into the dirt as she sobbed.
Alec cleared his throat uncomfortably. “May I help you, milady?” he asked awkwardly.
The woman gasped,
“I,” she spluttered, in awe.
Alec’s breath caught as he stared into her golden eyes. Although red and puffy from crying, her eyes pierced through him, evoking memories of the past. She had the same eyes as his cupid.
Alec shifted uncomfortably, then repeated, “May I help you, milady?”
