The following Monday everything got real. We had signed the contract and sent it back. They received it, and sent us our booking information on a flight that Wednesday.

My hotel manager was not very understanding.

“A month? That means I’m going to have to work Heather five days instead of three, and Bethany’s going to have to cover two of the morning shifts while doing her manager duties.”

“I know—I’m sorry. But this is a huge opportunity!”

She sighed and leaned back in her chair. “Junior, I can’t wait for a month for you to come back. I’m going to have to hire someone in the meantime. And that will take away your job. I can’t just have it waiting for you when you get back.”
