Chapter 17

“Harun?” Kelwyn’s voice was hopeful, fragile.

“I’m sorry,” said Harun softly, and he turned his head away from Kelwyn.

“You don’t like men? You don’t like me? You never seemed to mind my flirting…”

“I…It’s more complicated than that. But I can’t be…like that with you. I never minded your flirting, but there are reasons I’ve responded the way I have to it.”

Kelwyn sighed softly. “I know I ain’t your equal…”

“That’s not it at all!” said Harun, suddenly fierce, his ears going flat. Kelwyn’s habit of still seeing himself as only a street thief was immensely frustrating to Harun sometimes. Kelwyn was much more than that. He’d only just begun to explore his potential.

“Then what? If you’re gonna turn me down, I wanna know the reason.”

Harun heaved a deep sigh. “I…avoid human entanglements. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m not human, not remotely.”

“So what? I ain’t human either. I don’t think that matters.”
