Chapter 42

The older vampire began circling around to the side, putting Harun between the two of them. Despite the danger of being so bracketed, Harun was glad enough to have them where he could attack Lucretious without hitting Kelwyn. He turned toward Lucretious slightly, but he didn’t let Kelwyn out of his sight. If he lunged for the vampire he wanted, the other was likely to grab him. They would both be faster and stronger than he was, and the sword might not take Lucretious out immediately. He needed to stay on the defensive and hope some distraction turned up, or some other opportunity presented itself.

He cursed himself again for not going back to get help. He shouldn’t have come out here alone. He hadn’t really thought the “vampiric thrall” thing through to realize he’d be outnumbered.
