“Okay, Jason, maybe you should just spit it out,” Howard said, realizing that there had really been no lag time for Jason, it was just his mind that was rushing to process things.

“If you’re sure,” Jason said.

“Completely,” Howard said. “Right, kids?”

“If you’re ready, Da,” Janey said.

“And if you’re comfortable telling us, Da,” James said.

“Well, then if everyone is sure,” Jason said, then he looked at them again, pausing like an announcer in a beauty contest before he spoke. “Okay, what I need to tell you is…we’re broke.”

Howard could feel the tension drain from his body, and then he suddenly began to laugh.
