Chapter 39

“One hundred percent,” Howard said, his tone that of a man who is certain he will win a battle. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to prepare for tomorrow.”

Jason took out the trash, checked the front door, and turned out the lights downstairs. He knew that Howard went to bed earlier than he did, but Howard’s light was still on when he passed the master bedroom. Jason hesitated for a moment. He missed going in there and climbing into bed with Howard. After a moment, he walked to the guest room. The bookshelf was full of a wide variety of books that Howard left for guests, never knowing exactly who might like what. Jason picked a collection of horror stories off the shelf and sat in the cozy reading chair near the window.

About a half-hour later, Howard knocked on the door and then rushed inside the room.

“Do you mind if I look through your closet?” Howard asked.

“You want to borrow something for tomorrow?” Jason queried.
