Howard turned. This is why he never talked about people. He always got caught. He put on his biggest smile as he saw Sophie fix her face as well on the other side of the glass.

“Are you two coming in?” she asked, her smile pushed as far up on her face as he imagined a smile could go.

“Of course, we are,” Howard said, slowly opening the passenger side door.

He turned back to look at Jason, and they both said the same thing with their eyes. We fucked up.

Gio was on the driver’s side of the car, opening the door for Jason. As Howard climbed out, Sophie gave him a welcome hug. Her body was stiff. She had heard.

“Sophie, I…” Howard began, but she cut him off quickly.

“You’re hungry,” Sophie said. “You are absolutely famished, right? I can tell that’s what you’re going to say to me because I’ve been cooking all day. Gio and I have been über excited about having you two to dinner, and I’ve been working on it all day, so I just know that you’re going to eat a lot.”
