Chapter 19

“Then he never got a chance to tell you or anyone?” Josh felt his heart shrink. He found it hard to believe that there was anything that Silverbane would have kept from his sister.

There was a hardness in her stare as she pushed aside her pain and focused on him.

“When it came to you and your mother,” she said. “There was a lot my brother thought he could keep from me.”

Josh was tempted to keep his conversation with Silverbane a secret. Part of him wanted to hold onto that memory just as jealously as he guarded his memories of his mother. The steel in Elaine’s glare made him reconsider. She knew he was keeping something from her, just as he knew she was keeping something from him. Curiosity over Josh’s meeting with Silverbane was not the only reason she had come to find him so quickly after Silverbane’s death. It couldn’t have been more than two hours since Josh had left the main house.
