Chapter 29

As soon as the elders took their leave and the pack broke up into groups that supported each candidate, Josh made a beeline for the door. He didn’t need to listen to Bryce bragging or Matthew lamenting about the quality of the younger generation. There would be plenty of boasting, and the likelihood of a fight breaking out was high. Josh had to get out of the room before the tension rose enough that he would throw himself into the middle of it all. The instinct to ease that tension was so strong that he knew he would be in for a rough night if he stuck around. Elaine would have a fit if he left the house without her knowing, so the only thing he could do was hide himself in his bedroom. There he could block it all out and think. He had to find a way out of the pack.

“Where do you think you are going?” Elaine’s voice caught up with him as he headed toward the staircase to the second floor.
