Chapter 46

“This isn’t right.” Andrea paused so suddenly that Josh ran into her. “This isn’t wild enough.”

“Maybe we should go back.” Josh swatted away a few late autumn flies buzzing around his head. “I don’t really have the right shoes on for hiking.”

Andrea frowned. “Come on, sissy boy.”

She grabbed his hand playfully. It was hard to be mad at her, even though the comment caught him off guard. No one teased him in the family. Every insult was hurtled with enough venom that the words might as well be daggers. Andrea’s words, on the other hand, were as reassuring as her smile. There was even a little shyness in her gaze.

“I’ll take care of you.” She led him off the trail and straight into the forest.
