“I guess being a part of a family comes with a lot of responsibilities,” he said. “Then there’s the park to look after. They asked me to stay on and take over Ned’s position. So it looks like I’ve got my hands full.”

It was odd to talk about the family and not feel any pull to help it along. Josh still cared about them, but he was finally free of that innate need to please them. The only person Josh was worried about pleasing right now was the one man who had captured his heart.

“What have you been up to?” Gavin asked.

“Mostly helping Andrea pack. You wouldn’t believe how much stuff she has.”

The moment he said her name, Josh regretted it. The smile on Gavin’s lips faded.

“I tried reaching her,” he said. “She never returned my calls. Then her phone was disconnected.”
