It wasn’t a simple case of “starve.” SearchLight offered alternative blood, made with actual blood but augmented to ease a dragon’s twice-annual shedding and to make them more comfortable, if they were female dragons, when it came to laying their eggs.

“Dear?”

Renée jumped again.

“You’re passing the office, dear.”

Renée blushed. “Thank you.” She watched the secretary walk away and then she knocked on the door, noting that her hand was trembling slightly. She jammed both hands into her pockets and waited for the door to open.

When it did, she was face-to-face with Jenny. Mouth dry and hands still shaking badly, she parted her lips to say something, anything, that would calm her nerves. Even if it was biting.
