Renée looked nervous. “I was thinking how much I care about you, but how much I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know? For something to swoop in and ruin everything again. But then, I realized if I kept thinking like that, I’d cause the disaster myself.”
She looked so miserable. Jenny wrapped both arms around her and kissed the top of her head. “You’re saying you’re expecting me to leave again?”
“No, but for something equally terrible to happen.” Renée pulled back a little, although she stayed in the circle of Jenny’s arms. “It’s like something’s coming and I don’t know what, but I’m afraid.”
“Do either of your parents have magical blood?”
Renée nodded. “My dad, but only a drop. He says all the Beauchamps got a little because we’ve been ‘friends of the fae folk’ for generations.”
