Chapter 29

Behind them, there was the cracking sound of displaced air.

Jenny skidded under the brick overhang of a building. Now she, Renée, Dr. Sowerby, and the unknown man were all gathered under the dubious shelter.

Dr. Sowerby closed his eyes for a moment and there was another cracking sound. A shield snapped into place over the gardens, over their heads, and maybe even over the whole compound, for all Jenny knew.

“All right,” Dr. Sowerby said. “Our combatants are contained.”

Renée stood.

Jenny grabbed her arm and made her sit back down.

“But Agent Tavery’s out there! He’s fighting someone. Shouldn’t we be helping?”

“None of us have power over a genie-god,” Dr. Sowerby said. He glanced at the unknown man. “Dan, please keep explaining. The more I know, the more I can hopefully help.”
