She started to cry.

And when Renée hugged her, she wept against her girlfriend’s neck.

But soon, much too soon, they were urged apart by medtechs who needed to confirm Reese’s death. Whoever this Reese was, besides Dan’s lover, it was apparent to Jenny that only she and Dan truly grieved the man’s passing.

Three hours later, Renée made her slow way across the compound toward the dorm house. She walked even though she’d been offered a ride in a golf cart. She needed time to think.

While waiting for Jenny to come out of the room where she’d been taken by a supervisor, Renée sat next to Luke, who was alternately crying and cursing. Agent Mark Tavery was unconscious. She held his hand and he told her some things she hadn’t known.

One: Atlas had been planning to kill Mark, Luke, and Reese, believing the three of them to be what was hurting Dan.
