Finn, Russel, Joshua, and Lenny—J and L—and, of course, Dolly, we would make a little family.
“Whatever it is, get it taken care of,” Lou said. “And come back for the bus when you’re done.”
“We can’t afford both,” Finn told him.
“Doesn’t matter.” Lou rose from his desk chair. “I’ll let you take the bus gratis.”
“We don’t want you to lose money,” Finn insisted. “It’ll just have to wait.”
“It’s a hell of a lot of paperwork,” Lou told him, “but I won’t be out a dime. The county paid me for the towing and the rest I’ll…Don’t worry about the rest. The charges are ridiculous. The county can write it off. It’s not like I had to feed and walk your bus. Get out of here. Enjoy your new kitty. It seems like you two lovebirds can use a break.”
“How did you know we’re lovebirds?” I asked.
“Call yourselves a cab and I’ll see if I can find a box and a towel you can carry him to the vet in.” Lou evaded my question but did scratch Lenny’s head as he walked by.
