Chapter 10

“But you thought to make the call, I didn’t, and I should have been the one watching Bobby’s back.”

“You hadn’t met Ricky or seen what Ricky was. Because of Jay’s involvement I had an idea. I’d been watching him for months. I was suspicious because he only showed up when Zach and Keith weren’t working and Jay was. I was bound to see more than you did. I knew he had to be shady. Jay was one of Billy’s friends and this Ricky was one of Jay’s. You didn’t know how Jay really was, and I never said because I needed the job. Don’t beat yourself up about it.”

“You said what needed to be said when it became necessary. You threw yourself under the bus to save Bobby. I won’t beat myself up about not seeing it, but don’t you make light of what you gave Bobby.”

Mark stood. “Okay. I know when I’m outgunned. I can be ready to go in twenty minutes. I’ll take a quick shower and change my clothes.”

“Take your time. If you don’t mind, I’ll have a second cup of coffee while I wait.”
