Chapter 30

“My Gramps’ money insulated me against some of my father’s more egregious sins. But, I’m also the product of a dysfunctional family. However, my father’s sins aren’t mine and you’re not responsible for your mother’s or Billy’s transgressions.”

“I went with Billy.”

“You were a desperate teenager. You had a mother who met kindness with violence. You didn’t have a Gramps with money to help you or the guys like Jason did. If it weren’t for Gramps and the guys, I would have run. You had no one. But all of that has nothing to do with my feelings for you. I’m not my parents and you are definitely not yours. You stepped up and took care of your mother. Whoever your father was, he walked. I wished mine had, and Jason would have been immeasurably better off if Evan hadn’t met Ann, but then Jason wouldn’t have Kitty. So things happen for a reason.”
