Right after Jack Romano kills in man in the line of duty, he finds out his bemoaned first love's wife has died in childbirth and his ex-lover killed himself, leaving their sickly newborn to Jack. When they came up for air, Carlo continued, “We have this. It can take us further if you let it.”


Jack stared into Carlo’s eyes for a few minutes as if he were looking for something. “Okay, I’ll try.”


“Good. We have to get a move on, we have a lot to do before the next two weeks are up. After that, she could come home any day. We’re going to throw a baby shower on Monday. That gives us eleven days to set up after that. We’ll have it in the evening so the people from my office can come. On a Monday, so the guys from the Sunset can make it. We’ll get everything we need, don’t worry. The guys and my family will make sure of it.”  2


They arrived at Carlo’s at four. Carlo took Jack up to the bedrooms. “See, there’s a suite next to ours and one across from it for the nanny.”


“We’ve been fucking for almost nine months. What are you going to do, tip-toe past the nanny’s room whenever you want to get laid?”
