Chapter 56

Enzo’s thoughts returned to the present as they changed into the protective gear. When they finished changing into their paper scrubs, they were ready to go inside. Enzo and Gray entered the room just as Mama was leaving. She kissed them both on the cheek, patted Genevieve on the hand, and left. They sat down in two of the four easy chairs the room had collected in addition to a couch and a daybed.

More balloons had arrived since Genevieve couldn’t have flowers yet. Bobby and Keith bought her a beautiful, warm, furry robe for when she felt she could leave her bed and a pair of fuzzy mules and several pairs of fuzzy socks. Gray took his mother’s clothes home and washed them, then the staff sprayed them with disinfectant each time he brought them back.

Genevieve’s gaze traveled straight to her son. “I’m fine. I took the last of the radiation and chemo today. It made me sick, so they gave me a shot.”
