Heart in mouth, he clicked on the number he’d been dialing all week, and then tapping his foot, waited.

“Doctor’s Scarborough’s office,” a woman answered in a friendly voice.

“Uh, hello,” he sputtered, standing and pacing the room. “I was referred by a friend and was wondering if maybe I could, uh, make an appointment or how does that work?”

“Yes, of course. Let’s see…Your first consultation is free and then you and Doctor Scarborough will decide the course of action, if you choose to pursue therapy.”

Therapy. Could he do this?

“What is your name, please?”

He paused and almost hung up, but then his gaze fell on Chimera’s empty mat. Hadn’t she been in a cage when he’d found her? Hadn’t she been on the point of giving up? No one had wanted her then. Except hehad. He’d seen the beauty of her. And he not been wrong. He’d chosen her and given her the best years of her life.

Couldn’t he choose himself today?
