It was bad enough that he refused to play after last year. Marty sent him to a surgeon with a gambling problem that he knew would take a payoff. The surgery went very well but both the surgeon and Marty knew that if Gary kept pitching, he would end up with a useless arm and in constant pain. The surgeon told him he could play next season but the smart piece of shit went out and sought a second and third opinion. Both of those doctors advised him strongly not to play again, so Sayer retired.
