Chapter 20

No note. No explanation. He couldn’t believe that Dane had got what he wanted and then left. If he was honest with himself, he knew he didn’t need a note. Dane had already told him, more than once, why he didn’t want to be with Guy. Why he thought it was a bad idea. So the note wasn’t necessary, but at least it would have been polite. At least a note wouldn’t have left Guy adrift and confused and hurt.

It felt like somebody had skewered his heart. His disappointment was acute. Why couldn’t Dane at least say good-bye? Did he think it was easier to just walk away? Did he think thiswas easier for anybody? What was he doing at that moment? Had he found another job already? Did he regret his decision? Either decision?

Guy was sorry Dane had left, but he still couldn’t regret what happened between them. It had meant something to him, and he thought it had meant something to Dane, too. If it had been meaningless, he wouldn’t have disappeared. Right?

“Here you go.”
