Chapter 32

“It is. But there’s a lesson.” I was supposed to say, “Life goes on,” but how could I? “The lesson is friendship is everything and people, or pigs and spiders, are better together than alone.” I hoped I’d salvaged something there.

When I got to I-90, I had a decision to make.

“Why are you smiling?” Jefferson asked.

“I was just wondering if you qualify us for the carpool lane.” I decided against it.

We sang along to the radio, mostly country. It wasn’t my genre of choice, per se, but since I was too cheap to pony up for satellite, I had to settle for the stations that came in despite us being surrounded by mountains. Jefferson would join me the second or third time through the choruses. He caught on quickly, even imitating Willie Nelson’s twang in “On the Road Again.” I was having a blast. It had been a long time since I’d taken a road trip with a buddy. When Wilbur and I went to the grocery store, we only got to hear one or two songs. The store was pretty close to home.
