“Ah.” I raised his chin when he looked down. “Well, I only met your mother for about five minutes, but I still feel confident in saying she’s very open-minded and she adores you. If you’d like me to be there when you talk to her, I could hang back a while.”


Maggie showed up then. The timing was perfect. I didn’t butt in as they walked off, but I did offer a slight nod when Benji looked back. When I saw his mother hug him, I figured all had ended well.


I avoided Amy Lee. When I saw her coming toward me, I ducked behind the tree we had just saved. Peeking from behind, I saw her catch Patrick. That was fine with me.
