Chapter 56

I started to create two naked bodies intertwined, Jefferson and Calvin. The skin on one muscular back was darker. Jefferson’s obliques and the sides of his buttocks were visible the way I had him turned. His body was slight, quite thin. Calvin’s entire rear end showed, the way he raised himself up to press his flesh against his lover. Calvin’s body was powerful and strong, every bit of him like a statue etched in marble. Was it accurate? Was I feeling, seeing, guessing, or making shit up? Who knew? Not I.

I drew them kissing, with neither face showing, since I had no idea, still, what Jefferson and Calvin looked like. In a way, it didn’t matter. I remembered the earlier sketch I had done of just Jefferson. Everything one thinks of as being expressed in the face, friendliness, light, humor, affection, came from some sort of aura just from the pencil silhouette of his body. I decided to look at it, to see if I had captured Jefferson this time around.

“Where is it?”
