Chapter 57

“Halloween is on! Get up, Mary.” It was easier said than done. Shelby’s expression changed to one of mirth when I tugged on her arm and together we tried to get her out of the chair. “On your feet, A-Rod. We’ve got candy to dole out.”

“Trick or treat!”

The three of us were greeted on the other side of the door by a Pikachu, a black cat, a witch, and a mom dressed like a farmer, in overalls and a big straw hat. I recognized them all from the neighborhood.

“Nice! Here you go.” I dropped a handful of chocolates into each plastic pumpkin and offered a couple to Vicky, from three doors down. “Have fun.”

“You don’t really believe in ghosts, do you?” Shelby asked when I closed the door. “Why Jefferson? Why not Grandma or Grampa?”

“I only know what I know. That’s something we can research later.”
