Chapter 58

The wonderful qualities you see in someone else, someone else also sees in you. Be open, for love. Life is to be lived. The words evaporated as quickly as they’d come, as if spoken, not written. When I looked up from them, I noticed how Patrick’s eyes sparkled in the hundred-watt glow of the porchlight. Golden highlights in his hair shone, and his downturned mouth made mine water for a kiss.

“Well, good night, Goose. Happy Halloween.” He turned to go. “Oh. The chalkboard. It’s in the car. I’ll go get it.”

“Wait, Patrick.” I held out my hand. “Would you like to come in? They’re playing scary movies ‘til morning on AMC.”

Patrick took my hand. “Come in?”

“Yes.”

“Sure. I…I’d like that.”

“Good.”

He took a step, then paused. “Will you hold me if I get scared?”

I pulled him all the way in and shut the door. “I’ll hold you even if you don’t.”
