“It looks like the road is still passable,” Aaron shouted. “You need to go now.”

“We can’t. Not without Maria.”

Aaron peered into the orange darkness. The road wouldn’t be open for long. And the smoke was getting thicker. If the heat didn’t bake them to death, then the smoke would suffocate them.

“We’ll get your daughter out. You need to go.”

“No!”

“Fuck.” He looked around, watching for any sign of Xander, but there was nothing except the roar of wildfire. Not even distant shouts.

He’d done what he’d been told. The parents were out. It was time to check on his partner.

Winds blowing sparks forced Aaron to take the long way around the house, but he had to grind to a halt almost as soon as he rounded the corner. A wall of smoke separated him from the outbuildings, flames already starting to consume the back of the house.
