Chapter 31

He hit the roof of the cabin, and the truck jolted into life. He ducked his head, trying to avoid toasting his lungs, and focused his attention on Xander. He ran his hands over Xander’s chest and limbs, searching for any other scratches or tears.

Wracking coughs made Xander bend over, and it took several seconds of listening to them tear through his body before he could speak again. “You can’t wait to feel me up later?” he joked

“No, I can’t. Is there just a cut on your back?”

“As far as I can tell. One of the beams came down in the stable.” His mouth curved. “I’m not as fast as I used to be when I duck.”

“What was she doing?” The truck jerked and he nearly lost his footing. He grabbed Xander’s coat and pulled him down until they were both sitting. “Were there horses trapped out there?”

“Gear. I think she was after some of the saddles. People have whacked out priorities sometimes.”
