Chapter 24

The morning after visiting Mike at the hospital, Sage went into work, but was too antsy to do much other than to call back a man who had left a phone message that he wanted to hire Sage to design the landscaping for his new home. Sage set up an appointment to meet with him to see what he had to work with. Then he spent an hour or so staring at designs he’d done for another client before realizing he wasn’t really seeing them, as his thoughts kept drifting to Mike. He shut down his computer, left his office, and headed home to wait for Mike’s call. When it came, he took off, arriving ten minutes later to find Mike waiting in the lobby.

As soon as they were outside the hospital’s front door, Mike got out of the obligatory wheelchair, dryly thanking the nurse for her delivering him that far.

“I could have walked,” Mike told Sage, smiling wryly. “But hospital procedures and all that…”
